The launch of the Predator line of gaming PCs should be a good start, bringing a good set of components together in an at least half-decent looking chassis at fairly competitive prices. Going by what I saw and heard at the launch event, I think they might just be onto a winner. Currently the Predator range features a single system, the Aspire Predator G7700. This is then sub-divided into the Sniper, Trooper, Crusher and Eliminator, each with better components that the previous model, but also a higher price point. Unlike just about every other player in the gaming PC market Acer isn't allowing users to change the system specs at purchase, as it will be selling the Predator in stores only. The benefit to this is that budding purchasers can walk into a shop and pick up a system to fit their budget then and there without waiting for it to be built and then shipped - as with an online self-specced system. The baseline for the Predator is fairly impressive, however. A custom case has been designed by Acer, with an attractive angular design, hinged front door and four front accessible hot-swap hard drive racks. Acer says the case's finish is copper coloured, but I'm calling that bluff because it's orange and none the worse looking for that. All Predator systems sport a DVD-RW and a Blu-ray drive, liquid cooling for the CPU and come bundled with a Logitech G11 keyboard and G5 mouse. The latter two additions helping to avoid the common retail gaming PC pitfall of bundling rubbish peripherals with a high-end system.
